Abstract

The research endeavor at hand is basically meant to trace the most prominent regulatory, operational, fuel-related, and technological approaches employed for maritime emission reduction. From a quantitative perspective, the conducted review comprises four major categories and 80 research contributions. Operational optimization and efficiency strategies and alternative-fuel solutions take the largest shares of the investigations reviewed. Operational optimization and efficiency strategies comprise 29 studies (36.3%), while alternative-fuel solutions comprise 28 studies (35.0%). Comparably, port-related emissions and mitigation strategies include 15 studies (18.8%), whereas design optimization and technological innovations incorporate 8 studies (10.0%). Considering the fact that maritime transport is responsible for approximately 80-90% of global trade movement, curbing greenhouse gas emissions from the maritime field without endangering its economic significance has become a crucial objective. To attain the intended purposes optimally, the current work elaborates on four major IMO-related indicators: EEDI, EEXI, EEOI, and CII. Additionally, to recognize the full impacts of these indicators, the study incorporates detailed discussions and relevant analyses of influential factors in fuel-consumption and emission-estimation procedures, including the Marine Gas Oil (MGO) conversion factor of 3.206 tonnes of CO₂ per tonne of fuel. In light of the derived outcomes, achieving tangible emission reduction is mainly dependent on integrating regulatory compliance, port coordination, voyage optimization, greener fuel alternatives, digital monitoring, artificial intelligence, life-cycle assessment, and ship-design enhancement innovations. All in all, sustainable low-carbon maritime transportation can be realized through a coherent framework incorporating measurable assessment and practical implementation simultaneously
