Abstract

This study explores the readiness and preparedness of the major stakeholders within the Egyptian maritime sector towards the adoption of smart green port practices, with particular consideration given to Alexandria Port. With growing environmental threats, the need to support sustainable maritime operations is high. The study evaluates the current state of the ecosystem at Alexandria Port and benchmark it against international standards to highlight the critical gaps that should be covered for the effective execution of smart green port approaches. The results indicate that, although stakeholders have basic knowledge of sustainability issues, large perceived barriers, particularly regarding resource availability, limited technological integration, and poor regulatory frameworks, hamper progress. This study posits that geospatial technologies and artificial intelligence hold substantial potential for optimizing operations and minimizing environmental impacts. These technologies can enhance vessel tracking at Alexandria Port, improve resource allocation, and facilitate air and water quality monitoring for better waste management practices. The conclusion emphasizes that educational training programs are necessary in engaging stakeholders effectively, as well as capacity-building initiatives in establishing smart green port practices within the Egyptian maritime sector.
